Relief Returns to AAU Community as Security Team Rescues Kidnapped Students
There was a sense of relief around Ambrose Alli University (AAU), Ekpoma, after three students who were kidnapped during a deadly attack over the weekend were rescued by security operatives.
The students had been taken away by armed men who invaded the Ujemen G.T. Extension area of Ekpoma on Sunday night. During the attack, a 300-level student, Peter Ekpen Adolor, was shot after responding to cries for help outside a hostel. He later died in hospital.
His death sparked fear among students and residents, many of whom have raised concerns over repeated security incidents around the university community.
According to the Edo State Police Command, the rescue operation involved officers from the police, the Nigerian Army, Edo State Security Corps and local hunters.
Security teams spent hours gathering intelligence and searching nearby forests before locating the kidnappers’ hideout inside Erah Forest early Tuesday morning.
Police said the suspects opened fire when security operatives moved in, leading to a gun battle that forced the kidnappers to flee and abandon the three students.
The rescued victims—Favour Okoroje, Balogun Precious and Praise Obagbalu—were taken to hospital for medical attention before reuniting with their families.
During the operation, security personnel recovered three AK-47 rifles, several magazines, 36 rounds of live ammunition, mobile phones, power banks and other items believed to belong to the gang.
One suspected kidnapper was killed during the exchange of gunfire, while another was arrested with gunshot wounds. Police say efforts are continuing to arrest other members of the gang.
Although the successful rescue has brought hope to many students, the death of Peter Adolor has left the university community in mourning.
Kidnapping Remains a Growing Worry in Esan Communities
While the rescue operation ended on a positive note, residents of Esan West say kidnapping continues to threaten daily life in many communities.
One of the latest incidents happened in Idoa, where the secretary to the community’s traditional palace and three children were reportedly kidnapped while trying to repair a broken-down vehicle near a farm.
Family members said the gunmen later contacted them and demanded ₦30 million before releasing the victims.
The incident has increased calls for stronger security patrols across rural communities where residents say kidnappers often operate from nearby forests.
Community leaders have appealed to both the Edo State Government and security agencies to increase surveillance around farming areas and major access roads.
Government Releases ₦800 Million to Resume Long-Abandoned Flood Control Project
After years of complaints from residents affected by flooding in Benin City, the Edo State Government says work is finally set to resume on a major drainage project designed to reduce flooding across the state capital.
Commissioner for Environment and Sustainability, Nosa Adams, announced that the government has paid ₦800 million as counterpart funding required for the next phase of the Benin Storm Water Project.
According to him, the funding clears the way for construction to restart with support from the European Union Investment Bank.
Officials expect work to begin within the next two months after documentation and technical preparations are completed.
The project is expected to improve drainage around several flood-prone areas, including parts of Siluko Road, Ekewan Road and other major routes in Benin City.
Government officials believe the project will provide a long-term solution to flooding and erosion that have affected residents for years, especially during the rainy season.
Plans are also underway to improve drainage around the Government Reservation Area (GRA) by directing excess floodwater into the Ogba River.
Edo Set to Host Regional Environmental Testing Centre
Benin City has been selected as one of the locations for a regional environmental laboratory that will support pollution monitoring across four South-South states.
The proposed facility, backed by the Federal Ministry of Environment and the World Bank, will provide scientific testing services for Edo, Delta, Bayelsa and Ondo states.
According to Commissioner Nosa Adams, the Minister of Environment is expected to visit Edo in the coming weeks to officially launch the project.
The laboratory is expected to improve environmental regulation by making it easier to test water, soil and industrial waste without sending samples to distant laboratories.
Government officials say the project will also strengthen efforts to monitor pollution and enforce environmental standards across the region.
Environmental Violators Face Tougher Enforcement in Edo
The Edo State Government says it is stepping up enforcement against businesses that fail to meet environmental standards.
As part of the latest crackdown, authorities sealed four poultry farms and one piggery for violating environmental regulations.
Officials also revealed that environmental inspections have now covered more than 230 facilities across the state.
So far, 93 violation notices have been issued, while 30 repeat offenders have already been prosecuted under the state’s environmental law.
According to the Ministry of Environment, the establishment of a mobile environmental court has made it easier to prosecute habitual offenders without unnecessary delays.
The government says industries are also being required to treat waste properly before releasing it into the environment as part of efforts to protect public health.
More Young People to Benefit from Skills and Job Training
The Edo State Government has announced plans to expand vocational and digital training programmes as it looks to reduce youth unemployment.
Speaking during activities marking the 2026 World Youth Skills Day, Commissioner for Youth Affairs Charity Amayaenvbo said the government is working with EdoJobs, the Industrial Training Fund and other development partners to prepare young people for today’s job market.
Training opportunities are now available in information technology, agriculture, construction, renewable energy, fashion, hospitality, the creative industry and automobile technology.
The commissioner said the goal is to equip young people with practical skills that will help them find employment, start businesses and become financially independent.
He added that the programmes also give priority to women, persons living with disabilities and other vulnerable groups.
Political Coalition Questions Edo Council Election Figures
The Conference of Registered Political Parties (CRPP) has criticised the outcome of the recent local government election in Edo State, arguing that the official results do not reflect what happened at many polling units.
The coalition claimed voter turnout was low in several parts of the state despite the large number of votes announced after the election.
The APC won all 18 local government chairmanship seats and every councillorship position contested.
However, the CRPP said the figures released by the Edo State Independent Electoral Commission (EDSIEC) should be properly explained.
The group also asked the electoral body to provide details on the deployment of the 10,000 ad hoc staff it earlier announced before the election.
Despite the criticism, no official response had been issued by EDSIEC at the time of filing this report.
