Petrol prices in Benin City, Edo State, are currently ranging between ₦1,400 and ₦1,500 per litre, depending on the filling station.

A price check on Saturday showed petrol selling for ₦1,500 per litre at a TotalEnergies filling station in Benin City.

At an NNPC retail outlet, petrol was selling for about ₦1,400 per litre.

The difference means motorists may pay as much as ₦100 more per litre depending on where they buy fuel.

Fuel prices have continued to vary across filling stations in Edo State, with independent marketers and major retail outlets adjusting pump prices at different times.

Recent national reports also show that petrol prices have risen across several states following changes in crude oil prices and supply conditions.

Reuters reported earlier this week that petrol was selling for about ₦1,400 per litre in Lagos and Abuja, while prices had reached around ₦1,500 in some parts of Nigeria.

The latest prices in Benin City come as motorists and businesses continue to adjust to higher transport and operating costs.

Petrol prices also remain different from one location to another, meaning motorists may find lower or higher prices depending on the station and area.

The increase has also renewed attention on recent comments by Edo State Governor Monday Okpebholo, who compared fuel prices in Nigeria with those in the United Kingdom.

Okpebholo said petrol costs more than ₦3,000 per litre in the UK when converted to naira and argued that Nigerians are paying less at home.

His comments generated debate over whether fuel prices should be compared directly without also considering differences in wages and purchasing power.
