President Tinubu Orders Immediate Intervention on Benin Bypass Roads

President Bola Tinubu has ordered immediate intervention on the deteriorating Benin bypass road corridors, with repair efforts set to commence following a joint inspection by the Federal Government, Edo State Government and the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC).

The intervention is focused on failed sections of the Benin-Sapele-Warri and Benin-Agbor roads, two major corridors that connect Edo State to other parts of the South-South and beyond.

The decision followed concerns over the worsening condition of the highways, which has caused difficulties for motorists, residents and businesses that depend on the roads for the movement of people and goods.

Minister of Works, Senator David Umahi, disclosed the Federal Government’s commitment to addressing the deteriorating sections during an inspection of the affected roads on Thursday.

Umahi said the immediate intervention followed a directive from President Tinubu in response to concerns over the condition of the critical road corridors.

FG, NDDC Inspect Failed Sections

The inspection brought together Governor Monday Okpebholo, Minister of Works David Umahi, the NDDC Managing Director, Dr Samuel Ogbuku, members of the Senate and House of Representatives committees on Works, as well as other stakeholders.

The stakeholders assessed sections of the Benin-Sapele-Warri and Benin-Agbor roads to determine the extent of deterioration and the intervention required.

According to Umahi, the Federal Government is looking at both immediate measures and sustainable solutions to the problems affecting the corridors.

The Ministry of Works also brought in the Edo State Government, NDDC and construction companies operating along the Benin-Asaba axis as part of efforts to coordinate the intervention.

NDDC Targets 15.4km Benin-Ologbo-Sapele Stretch

The NDDC has identified a 15.4-kilometre stretch between Benin, Ologbo Junction and Sapele for intervention.

NDDC Managing Director, Dr Samuel Ogbuku, said the commission had received complaints about the hardship motorists were experiencing along the Benin-Sapele corridor.

He described the road as strategically important to the region, noting that sections had deteriorated to the point where movement had become extremely difficult.

According to Ogbuku, the condition of the road has contributed to gridlock, hardship for motorists and disruptions to economic activities.

He said the NDDC and the Federal Ministry of Works had agreed to work together on the intervention, with remedial work expected to conform to the original design of the road.

The aim, he said, is to ensure that the intervention does not merely provide temporary relief but produces a road capable of standing the test of time.

Okpebholo Welcomes Federal Intervention

Governor Monday Okpebholo commended President Tinubu for responding to the deteriorating condition of the roads.

The governor stressed the importance of the corridors to Edo State, describing the state as a gateway connecting the South-South, South-East, South-West and northern parts of Nigeria.

Okpebholo said the Federal Government’s intervention would help to quickly address the deterioration of the affected sections.

The governor’s position reflects the wider importance of the roads to Edo, where Benin City serves as a major transport and commercial hub.

What the Intervention Means for Edo Road Users

The planned repairs are expected to provide relief for motorists and commuters who have faced difficult journeys along the affected routes.

The Benin-Sapele-Warri and Benin-Agbor corridors are also important for the movement of agricultural produce, commercial goods and other economic activities between Edo and neighbouring states.

The poor condition of sections of the roads has therefore affected more than just daily commuters, with businesses and transport operators also facing the consequences of difficult road access.

With the Federal Government now directing immediate attention to the affected corridors and the NDDC joining the intervention, attention will shift to the commencement and execution of the repair work.

For residents and motorists, the expectation is clear: that the intervention will move quickly from inspection to actual repairs and provide a lasting solution to the problems along the Benin bypass corridors.
