Edo Government Raises Alarm Over Arrests of PDP Leaders and Supporters

On Tuesday, the Edo State Government voiced serious concerns regarding the ongoing detention of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) leaders, alleging that the All Progressives Congress (APC) is behind a targeted crackdown. According to the state’s claims, over ten PDP leaders, including Collins Aigbogun, the Chairman of Esan West Local Government Area, are currently being held in custody under the directives of the APC.

Chris Nehikhare, Edo State Commissioner for Communication and Orientation, made these allegations public during a press briefing in Benin City. He urged security agencies to halt the frequent arrests of PDP members and supporters as the September 21, 2024, gubernatorial election approaches. Nehikhare emphasized that no degree of intimidation will sway the election outcome in favor of the APC.

Nehikhare further accused the APC of masterminding these detentions, stating, “Some of our members have been in detention for the past two months without formal charges.” He called for transparency and accountability, demanding that the APC clarify the reasons behind these actions and provide a legal explanation for the detentions.

In a related development, Newman Ugiagbe, Chairman of the Edo State chapter of the Association of Local Governments of Nigeria (ALGON), condemned the recent assault and arrest of Collins Aigbogun. Ugiagbe labeled these actions as egregious breaches of democratic norms and the rule of law.

“ALGON urgently calls on relevant security agencies—including the Attorney General, the Commissioner of Police in Edo State, and the AIG Zone 5—to investigate these violations and bring those responsible to justice,” Ugiagbe asserted. He expressed dismay at the APC’s alleged resort to violence and intimidation, warning that such tactics undermine the integrity of the electoral process.

Ugiagbe emphasized the importance of protecting democratic principles and called for collective action from all stakeholders to ensure a fair and peaceful election. He further demanded the immediate release of Aigbogun, stressing that violence and harassment have no place in a democratic society.

“We urge authorities to prioritize the investigation of this assault and hold the perpetrators accountable. Our democratic values and the safety of all citizens must be upheld. We call for the immediate release of Hon. Collins Aigbogun and an end to these undemocratic practices,” Ugiagbe concluded.

This alarming situation underscores the heightened tensions and potential threats to the electoral process in Edo State, with both parties intensifying their rhetoric and actions as the election date draws near.
