Days after a woman was abducted while shopping with her family at the popular Vegetable Market along Airport Road in Benin City, the Edo State Police Command has paraded suspects allegedly connected to the incident.
The suspects were presented alongside other criminal suspects during a police parade attended by Edo State Governor, Senator Monday Okpebholo, who reiterated his administration’s commitment to combating kidnapping, cultism and other violent crimes across the state.
The abduction, which occurred in broad daylight on a Sunday afternoon, sparked widespread outrage and fear among residents after eyewitness accounts and videos of the incident circulated on social media.
The victim had reportedly visited the market with her husband and children after church service when armed men forcefully whisked her away in the presence of traders, customers and passers-by.
Confirming the latest development, the Edo State Police Command disclosed that investigations into the incident led to the arrest of suspects believed to have played roles in the operation.
Governor Okpebholo, while addressing security agencies and residents, warned criminal elements operating in Edo State not to mistake his calm disposition for weakness, stressing that his administration would continue to support law enforcement agencies in their efforts to rid the state of kidnapping and other criminal activities.
The governor also revealed plans to propose a special court for the speedy trial of kidnapping and cultism-related cases, while emphasizing that convicted offenders could face the full penalties prescribed by law.
The arrest of the suspects has been welcomed by many residents who had earlier demanded swift action following the shocking abduction at the busy market.
Police authorities have assured the public that investigations are ongoing and that efforts are being intensified to dismantle criminal networks operating within the state.
The development marks a significant breakthrough in the case and reinforces ongoing efforts by security agencies to address growing concerns over public safety in Edo State.
