Governor Monday Okpebholo’s plan to deliver Edo State to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in the 2027 presidential election received a major boost on Sunday after the All Progressives Congress (APC) won all 18 chairmanship seats and the 192 councillorship positions in the Edo State local government elections.
The clean sweep gives the APC full control of the 18 local government councils in the state, a development expected to strengthen the party’s grassroots political structure ahead of the next general election.
Since assuming office, Governor Okpebholo has repeatedly declared that Edo State would stand firmly behind President Tinubu in 2027. On several occasions, he has promised to deliver 2.5 million votes for the President, describing it as a commitment he intends to fulfill.
Saturday’s council election is now being seen by many within the APC as an important step towards achieving that political goal.
The Edo State Independent Electoral Commission (EDSIEC) announced the results on Sunday in Benin City, declaring the APC winner of every chairmanship and chancellorship seat contested across the state.
EDSIEC Chairman Jonathan Aifuobhokhan said the elections were conducted in line with the Edo State Local Government Electoral Law and other relevant electoral guidelines.
According to him, the commission completed accreditation, voting, sorting, counting and collation of results across the 18 local government areas before the winners were declared.
He said although there were minor operational challenges in a few locations, they did not affect the overall outcome of the election.
Aifuobhokhan also announced that certificates of return would be presented to the successful candidates on Monday and advised any political party dissatisfied with the outcome to seek redress through the courts.
For Governor Okpebholo, the election victory goes beyond winning council seats.
Local government chairmen and councillors are regarded as the foundation of party politics at the grassroots. They help mobilise supporters, coordinate campaigns and strengthen party structures across wards and communities.
With the APC now controlling all 18 local government councils, the governor has a stronger political base as preparations gradually begin for the 2027 elections.
The result is also expected to boost the APC’s confidence in Edo, where the party hopes to improve on President Tinubu’s performance in the last presidential election.
Whether the governor can eventually fulfil his promise of delivering 2.5 million votes for President Tinubu in 2027 remains to be seen. However, after securing total victory in the local government elections, the APC has taken an early step towards building the political structure it believes will be needed for that ambition.
For now, the clean sweep has handed Governor Okpebholo his biggest political victory since assuming office and provided fresh momentum for the ruling party ahead of the 2027 electoral battle.
