Edo State Government Tackles Insecurity, Orders Reopening of Schools Previously Closed Over Security Concerns

By EdoToday.com

The Edo State Government has announced the reopening of schools that were temporarily shut down due to security concerns, following a review of the security situation and the implementation of additional safety measures across affected communities.

The directive was contained in a circular issued by the Edo State Ministry of Education dated June 12, 2026, and signed under reference number MOE/PS/CIR/002.

The circular, addressed to executive principals, head teachers of public schools, proprietors and proprietresses of private schools, as well as members of the general public, confirmed that the government had reassessed the situation in collaboration with security agencies and other relevant stakeholders.

Government Reviews Security Situation

According to the Ministry of Education, the earlier closure of some schools was a precautionary measure taken following security concerns in certain areas.

The government stated that after a comprehensive review and engagement with relevant security bodies, necessary arrangements had been put in place to ensure the safety of students, teachers, and other school personnel.

The circular noted that enhanced security measures and additional safety mechanisms had been deployed across the affected schools and communities, allowing academic activities to resume.

Schools to Resume Normal Academic Activities

The Edo State Government assured parents, guardians, school owners, and education stakeholders that the reopening decision was based on improved security arrangements and a commitment to protecting learners and staff.

The Ministry urged all concerned schools to comply with the directive and ensure a safe learning environment as academic activities continue.

Security Measures Strengthened Across Affected Areas

The reopening comes as part of the government’s broader effort to balance educational continuity with public safety.

The administration had earlier directed the temporary closure of some schools after security concerns emerged, with the aim of preventing risks while security agencies worked to address the situation.

With the latest development, schools affected by the closure are expected to resume operations following the government’s confirmation that safety measures have been strengthened.

The circular was copied to key education stakeholders, including the Executive Chairman of the Edo State Secondary Education Board (SSEB), Executive Chairman of SUBEB, Executive Chairman of the Board for Technical and Vocational Education (BTVE), the Director-General of DEQA, directors at the Ministry of Education, chief inspectors of education across the 18 local government areas, and education secretaries.
