Edo Assembly Member Moves Motion Against Police Brutality in Oredo West

Edo Assembly Member Moves Motion Against Police Brutality in Oredo West

A member of the Edo State House of Assembly representing Oredo West Constituency, Hon. Richard Edosa, has moved a motion addressing the disturbing reports of police brutality within his constituency and other parts of the state.

The lawmaker, during Tuesday’s plenary session, said he was compelled to act after receiving multiple complaints from residents detailing harassment, intimidation, and unprofessional conduct by some police officers operating in Oredo West.

He noted that while the police are constitutionally empowered to maintain law and order, the misuse of that authority undermines public trust and inflicts long-term emotional harm on citizens.

“The psychological toll of police brutality is real. My constituents have recounted disturbing encounters with officers who abused their power and left lasting emotional scars,” he said.

Describing the matter as urgent, he added, “This is a grave issue that must not be treated with leniency. I express my gratitude to Mr. Speaker and my honorable colleagues who seconded this motion. Every indigene and resident of Edo State must be treated with respect and dignity.”

The motion called on the leadership of the Edo State Police Command to investigate the allegations thoroughly and take immediate steps to curb further abuse. He also urged the House to work with relevant agencies to establish a community-based feedback system that ensures accountability and restores confidence in law enforcement.

The motion received support from other members of the House, many of whom expressed concern over growing incidents of police overreach across the state. Several lawmakers emphasized the need for regular training and internal checks within the police force to protect citizens’ rights.

The Assembly committed to forwarding the resolution to the appropriate authorities and following up to ensure swift and meaningful action is taken.

The development has been welcomed by residents in Oredo West, many of whom say it’s a much-needed step toward restoring dignity and fairness in community policing.
