VIDEO: Edo CP Orders Investigation After Police, EDSTMA Officers Clash in Benin

A video showing a confrontation between police officers and personnel of the Edo State Traffic Management Agency (EDSTMA) has prompted the Edo State Commissioner of Police, CP Patrick Daaor, to order an investigation into the incident.

The footage, which surfaced on social media on Thursday, shows personnel from the two agencies involved in an altercation while carrying out their duties. An officer of the police Intelligence Response Team is also seen firing into the air during the incident.

Following the circulation of the video, CP Daaor interviewed representatives of both sides and ordered a discreet investigation to establish what led to the confrontation.

The Commissioner also directed that the conduct of the officer seen firing the weapon be subjected to an appropriate disciplinary review.

In a statement issued by the command’s spokesperson, ASP Eno Ikoedem, the police said it would not condone indiscipline, unprofessional conduct or abuse of police powers by its personnel.

The command said any officer or personnel found culpable after the investigation would face appropriate sanctions in line with existing laws and regulations.

The police did not immediately disclose what triggered the confrontation or assign blame to either side, indicating that those issues would be determined through the investigation.

The command also stressed the importance of maintaining a professional relationship between the police and EDSTMA, noting that effective public safety depends on cooperation and mutual respect among government and security agencies.

The incident is therefore being treated as a matter for investigation without prejudice to the existing working relationship between the Edo State Police Command and EDSTMA.

The police also urged members of the public not to take the law into their own hands when they encounter alleged misconduct by officers. Residents were advised to report such complaints through the Police Complaint Response Unit.

The outcome of the investigation has not yet been announced.
