Tertiary education Students studying in Edo State can access the Federal Government’s student loan scheme through the Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND), provided their institution and student records meet the requirements of the programme.
The scheme was introduced by the Federal Government to help Nigerian students deal with the cost of higher education by providing financial support for approved institutional fees and, where applicable, upkeep.
For students searching for schools in Edo State eligible for NELFUND loan, some of the state’s major public tertiary institutions have already appeared in NELFUND’s institutional records.
Here is what you need to know before applying.
Universities in Edo State Eligible for NELFUND Loan
1. University of Benin (UNIBEN)
The University of Benin, located in Benin City, was included among the federal tertiary institutions approved for the first phase of the NELFUND student loan programme.
UNIBEN appeared on the original list of 126 federal institutions eligible to participate in the scheme. NELFUND also subsequently made institutional disbursements to the university for beneficiaries.
This means eligible Nigerian students of UNIBEN can participate in the student loan scheme when their student information has been properly captured and verified for the relevant application cycle.
2. Edo State University, Uzairue
Edo State University, Uzairue is one of the Edo State-owned institutions that NELFUND specifically cleared for participation in the student loan programme.
The university was included in the first group of 36 state-owned tertiary institutions whose student data had been submitted to NELFUND’s Student Verification System. NELFUND subsequently opened the application window to students of those institutions.
This makes Edo State University one of the clearest confirmed state-owned institutions in Edo for the NELFUND student loan scheme.
3. Ambrose Alli University (AAU), Ekpoma
Ambrose Alli University, Ekpoma, also appears in NELFUND-related institutional records for student verification and loan participation.
The institution was included in a later list of tertiary institutions involved in the NELFUND student data submission process.
Students of AAU should therefore be able to proceed with the NELFUND application where their institution has submitted the required student information for the applicable loan cycle.
Polytechnics in Edo State Eligible for NELFUND Loan
1. Auchi Polytechnic
Federal Polytechnic Auchi is another Edo State institution included in NELFUND’s original list of eligible federal institutions.
It was listed among the 126 institutions approved for the first phase of the student loan scheme.
Students of Auchi Polytechnic who meet the loan requirements can therefore apply through the NELFUND system when applications are open for their academic session.
2. Edo State Polytechnic, Usen
Edo State Polytechnic, Usen, also appears in institutional records connected with the NELFUND student loan process.
Students should have their correct matriculation and admission information available because NELFUND uses institutional and student information for verification before a loan can be processed.
3. Edo State College of Nursing Sciences
Edo State College of Nursing Sciences also appears in NELFUND-related institutional records.
Students should note that appearing in an institutional data list does not mean every student automatically receives a loan. Individual eligibility and successful verification are still required.
What Does the NELFUND Student Loan Cover?
NELFUND provides funding for approved institutional fees and monthly upkeep of 20,000 (Twenty Thousand Naira ) .
Meanwhile the Fund’s terms state that it may pay institutional fees and upkeep or institutional fees without an upkeep allowance, depending on the approved arrangement.
The student loan is intended to reduce the immediate financial burden of tertiary education.
However, it is important to understand that NELFUND money is a loan, not a scholarship or grant.
If you receive the loan, you are expected to repay it according to NELFUND’s repayment conditions.
Who Can Apply for NELFUND Loan?
If you are a Nigerian student in an eligible tertiary institution, you can begin the application process through the NELFUND Student Loan Portal.
You will need your educational information to be verified before the application can proceed.
NELFUND’s application system requests information including your:
- Name
- Institution
- Admission number
- JAMB number
- Date of birth
- National Identification Number (NIN)
- Bank Verification Number (BVN)
NELFUND’s FAQ specifically lists these details among the information applicants may be required to provide.
Your institution must also have the relevant student information available to NELFUND for verification.
How to Apply for NELFUND Loan in Edo State
If you are a student of UNIBEN, Auchi Polytechnic, Edo State University or another participating Edo institution, you can apply through the NELFUND Student Loan Portal.
Follow these steps:
Step 1: Open the NELFUND Student Loan Portal
Go to the official NELFUND Student Loan Portal. portal.nelf.gov.ng
Select the option to create an account if you have not previously registered.
The registration page first asks you to confirm that you are Nigerian and then takes you through educational and student-status verification.
Step 2: Confirm your Nigerian citizenship
Select “Yes, I am a Nigerian.”
You will then proceed to the educational verification stage.
Step 3: Verify your educational information
Provide the information requested about your tertiary institution and your admission.
This is where your school and student information are matched with the records submitted to NELFUND.
Make sure your name, JAMB number, admission number and other details correspond with the information held by your institution.
Step 4: Verify your student status
NELFUND’s registration system provides a student-status verification stage.
Follow the verification prompt and provide the required information.
The system may use your JAMB information as part of the verification process.
Step 5: Create or access your student loan account
After completing the registration and verification stages, log into your NELFUND account.
The login page requires your registered email address and password.
Step 6: Select the student loan application
After logging in, select “Request for Student Loan.”
NELFUND’s official instructions identify this as the starting point for the actual loan application.
Step 7: Complete the application
Enter the information requested on the application form.
This includes your educational information and other personal details required by NELFUND.
Check every entry carefully before submitting because incorrect information can affect verification.
Step 8: Apply for the relevant loan support
Complete the section relating to the financial support you are requesting.
NELFUND may provide institutional-fee support and, where approved, upkeep support.
Step 9: Submit the application
Review your information and submit the application.
After submission, keep your login details safe so you can return to your account to monitor the status of your application.
The official portal says the application can generally be completed within about 15 to 30 minutes.
What Happens After You Apply?
Your application is subject to verification.
NELFUND uses information supplied by applicants and institutions to establish eligibility and process the loan.
The Fund collects institutional information, admission or matriculation details, course information and other supporting information as part of its loan and eligibility process.
If your application is approved, the institutional component of the loan can be paid toward your approved school charges, while any approved upkeep component is handled according to the Fund’s terms.
This is why students should ensure that their school has correctly captured their student information.
Do Students Have to Repay the NELFUND Loan?
Yes.
NELFUND student loans are repayable.
The Fund’s terms state that students who participate in NYSC begin repayment two years after completing NYSC. The repayment terms also require beneficiaries to update their employment information when they become employed.
For beneficiaries who become employees, the terms provide for repayment through deductions from salary. NELFUND’s published terms state that 10 percent of monthly salary is to be deducted for repayment.
Students who become self-employed also have obligations to update their business information with the Fund.
Therefore, you should only apply for the loan if you understand that the money will eventually have to be repaid.
What If Your Edo School Is Not Showing on the Portal?
If you enter the application system and cannot find your institution, do not select another school simply to continue the application.
The NELFUND system relies on institutional data for verification.
The problem may be that your institution has not submitted or updated the relevant student information for that particular application cycle.
In that situation, contact your school’s bursary, student affairs office or designated NELFUND officer and ask them to confirm whether your student record has been uploaded and verified for the current loan cycle.
You should provide your correct admission or matriculation details so the institution can locate your record.
Can Students Who Have Already Paid Their School Fees Still Benefit?
The existence of a NELFUND loan does not automatically mean that students who previously paid their fees will lose their money.
NELFUND’s institutional payment system has resulted in cases where students who had already paid their fees before loan disbursement became eligible for refunds from their institutions.
The refund process, however, is handled through the institution and depends on the circumstances of the student’s account.
Students who paid their fees and later received NELFUND funding should check their student account and their institution’s refund process to determine whether they are entitled to a refund.
