There was a moment of reflection at the 7th Anniversary Celebration of Edo Specialist Hospital on Thursday as Commissioner for Health in Edo State Dr. Cyril Oshiomhole, son of former Edo State Governor, Senator Adams Aliu Oshiomhole, shared the personal tragedy that inspired the establishment of the hospital.
Representing his father at the event, Cyril told guests that the hospital was born out of the family’s painful loss of their mother, Clara Oshiomhole, to breast cancer.
According to him, the experience exposed the urgent need to improve access to quality healthcare in Edo State, particularly for patients requiring specialist medical attention.
“This hospital was established following the painful loss of our mother, Clara Oshiomhole, to breast cancer. Out of that painful experience came the determination to strengthen healthcare in Edo State so that many people would have access to good medical care at home,” he said.
Cyril explained that what started as a deeply personal loss eventually became a vision that has continued to impact thousands of lives across the state.
“What began as a deep loss became a public vision, one that today belongs to the people of Edo State.”
Speaking emotionally about the hospital’s significance to his family, he said every patient whose life has been saved at the facility reminds them that tragedy can be transformed into something meaningful.
“This hospital means so much to me personally. Every life saved here is a reminder that even our greatest pain can be transformed into a blessing for others.”
His remarks drew applause from guests at the anniversary celebration, which brought together government officials, healthcare professionals, traditional rulers, development partners and other stakeholders in the health sector.
The event also celebrated seven years of Edo Specialist Hospital’s contributions to specialist healthcare, highlighting its growth in clinical services, residency training, medical infrastructure and patient care.
Founded during the administration of former Governor Adams Oshiomhole, the hospital has grown into one of Edo State’s leading specialist health institutions, providing advanced medical services to residents within and outside the state.
The anniversary celebration also served as an opportunity to honour the vision behind the institution while reaffirming the commitment of its management and the Edo State Government to improving healthcare delivery for the people of the state.
