Obidient Movement Shakes Up Edo Politics: Backs APC Candidate

In a surprising twist ahead of the September 21, 2024, Edo State Governorship election, a faction of the Obidient Movement has thrown its weight behind the All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate, Senator Monday Okpebholo.

The Obidient Movement, originally formed to support Peter Obi during the 2023 presidential election, is known for its advocacy for good governance and accountability. Members from the Edo South Senatorial District recently declared their support for Okpebholo, citing his strong ties with the community as a key reason.

However, this endorsement has not gone down well with the Edo State chapter of the Labour Party (LP). The LP criticized the faction’s decision, arguing that it contradicts the Movement’s foundational principles. The Labour Party’s Publicity Secretary, Sam Uruopa, expressed disbelief, stating that it was absurd for supposed members of the Obidient Movement to back candidates from other parties.

Background: The Obidient Movement

The Obidient Movement gained prominence during the 2023 presidential election, aiming to bolster Peter Obi’s candidacy. Post-election, the Labour Party, led by Julius Abure, established the Obidient Directorate to address the movement’s members’ needs. However, this was short-lived as Peter Obi clarified that the Obidient Movement was not affiliated with any political party.

Reasons for the Endorsement

During a meeting with Senator Okpebholo, Ikhuenbor Igbinevbo, Coordinator General of the Obidient Movement for Okpebholo, highlighted the Movement’s commitment to good governance. He explained that the decision to support Peter Obi was based on the belief that it was the Igbo’s turn for leadership. Similarly, he stated that it is now the turn of the Esan people in Edo State, emphasizing the need for a qualified leader who understands the community’s needs.

Okpebholo’s Response

Senator Okpebholo welcomed the support from the Obidient Movement, praising their commitment to good governance. He promised to exceed the achievements of the current governor, Godwin Obaseki, and called on voters to reject the status quo, warning that failure to do so could negatively impact future generations.

Labour Party’s Reaction

The Labour Party has strongly condemned the endorsement. Sam Uruopa pointed out that the Obidient Movement’s support for Okpebholo and other candidates, such as Asue Ighodalo, contradicts the Movement’s original mission. He stressed that true members of the Obidient Movement should support the Labour Party’s candidate, Olumide Akpata, to remain consistent with their values.

Conclusion

The endorsement of APC’s Okpebholo by a faction of the Obidient Movement has introduced new dynamics into the Edo State Governorship race. As the election approaches, it remains to be seen how these political maneuvers will influence voter sentiment and the overall outcome.
