Edo State Power Transition: Governor Obaseki Hands Over to Okpebholo, Grants Pardon to 10 Inmates

EdoToday reports that Edo State Governor Godwin Obaseki has marked his last official day in office with a significant act of clemency. On Monday before handing over, the former governor granted pardons to ten inmates serving in correctional facilities across Edo State. This exercise of mercy, an established executive privilege, serves as part of his final legacy, ensuring that select inmates with less than a year remaining in their sentences will have a chance at early reintegration into society.

The ten pardoned inmates—Igwe Kelechukwu, Esazobor Ohioze, Gift Osaretun, Takyi Rockson, Dikuar Friday, Ossai Glory, Augustine Sunday, Daulagha Ebifagha Godluck, James Paul, and Anas Isah—received clemency following a recommendation by the Edo State Advisory Council on the Prerogative of Mercy, chaired by retired Justice P.O. Isibor. The council had received a letter from the Benin Correctional Service, formally requesting pardons for inmates who demonstrated good behavior and had under one year left in their sentences. Following scrutiny, the council approved the request, which Obaseki granted as a parting gesture of goodwill.

According to a statement from Crusoe Osagie, Special Adviser, Media, Governor’s Office, this clemency aligns with Edo State’s principles of mercy and rehabilitation, aiming to encourage positive reintegration for individuals ready to contribute to their communities.

The Incoming Administration: Okpebholo’s Historic Inauguration

Governor Obaseki’s tenure officially ended on Monday 11th November 2024, paving the way for Monday Okpebholo’s swearing-in as the new governor of Edo State. Okpebholo, a member of the All Progressives Congress (APC), secured his seat following a victory in the September 21, 2024, gubernatorial election, where he defeated the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidate Asue Ighodalo.

The inauguration ceremony, set to take place at the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium in Benin City, marks Okpebholo’s historic ascension as the fifth governor since the Fourth Republic began in 1999. The stadium and surrounding areas, including the renowned Airport Road, have undergone extensive preparations for this pivotal event. Key national figures, including Senate President Godswill Akpabio and leading APC governors, are expected to attend the celebration, underscoring the political significance of this power shift.

Political Dynamics and Expected Attendees

Okpebholo’s inauguration will attract a host of prominent dignitaries. Among the expected attendees are the Senate President and members of the Senate, along with leaders from the House of Representatives, including Speaker Tajudeen Abbas. Dennis Idahosa, Okpebholo’s new deputy and a sitting member of the House of Representatives, is also expected to be joined by a significant contingent from the Green Chamber.

A committee member overseeing the inauguration arrangements hinted that the event would showcase unity and support within the APC, with attendees ranging from APC governors and senators to high-ranking officials and ministers. “Party bigwigs are arriving in town,” noted the committee member, emphasizing the scale and significance of the occasion for both Edo State and the APC’s strategic interests in the region.

Obaseki’s Expected Absence and Implications

Despite the importance of the ceremony, Governor Obaseki may not attend, reportedly due to not receiving a formal invitation. This absence highlights ongoing tensions between the outgoing and incoming administrations, underscoring a transition that, while orderly, has experienced strains in recent weeks. Nevertheless, an inauguration committee member confirmed that the event would proceed as planned. “The inauguration will go on regardless. The people of Edo are ready to celebrate a new era, and Governor Okpebholo’s supporters will be there in full force,” he stated.

Key Points of the Transition and Clemency

  1. Humanitarian Approach: Obaseki’s pardoning of inmates is a compassionate closing act, embodying Edo State’s dedication to justice with mercy. By granting clemency to individuals nearing the end of their sentences, the governor aimed to provide them an opportunity for early reintegration into society.
  2. Democratic Transition: The inauguration symbolizes a peaceful and democratic power transfer, a core principle in Edo State’s governance ethos, setting a positive tone for the future.
  3. Political Realignment: Okpebholo’s leadership marks a significant political shift for the state. The incoming governor’s success has energized APC supporters, many of whom see this as a rejuvenating moment for both the party and the state.
  4. Economic and Social Outlook: With Okpebholo’s administration on the horizon, expectations are high for new policies aimed at boosting economic growth, social development, and public welfare. Many Edo residents view this transition as a fresh start for the state.

Conclusion: A Moment of Change for Edo State

Governor Godwin Obaseki’s legacy concludes with an act of mercy, while the baton passes to Monday Okpebholo, who brings a new vision for Edo State. As Okpebholo assumes office, he faces the task of steering Edo’s progress in a direction that reflects the aspirations of its citizens and upholds the state’s democratic values. The peaceful transition of power and the granting of clemency to inmates highlight Edo’s commitment to justice, compassion, and forward-looking governance.

Okpebholo’s inauguration signals a renewed journey for Edo, with hopes that this administration will continue fostering growth, unity, and prosperity for all residents.
