Edo Govt Alerts IGP on Shaibu’s Alleged Plot to Storm Govt House with Thugs

Edo Govt Alerts IGP, Nigerians on Shaibu’s Alleged Plan to Invade Government House with Thugs, Despite Ongoing Appeal

The Edo State Government has raised concerns over an alleged plot by the former Deputy Governor of Edo State, Comrade Philip Shaibu, to forcefully gain entry into the Edo State Government House on Monday, September 30. This move is reportedly aimed at enforcing his supposed reinstatement, despite an ongoing appeal for a stay of execution against the recent ruling by Justice J.K. Omotosho.

In a statement issued by Crusoe Osagie, the Special Adviser to the Edo State Government, the Inspector General of Police (IGP), and the general public were urged to intervene in preventing Shaibu from taking this drastic step. Osagie described the planned action as a “clear recipe for chaos,” particularly as it recalls a previous incident during which a police officer tragically lost his life when Shaibu attempted a similar move.

Osagie stated, “We are bringing to the attention of the Inspector General of Police, as well as all well-meaning Nigerians, the intelligence gathered on a plan by the former Deputy Governor, Comrade Philip Shaibu, to forcefully enter the Edo State Government House to enforce a ruling by Justice J.K. Omotosho.”

He added, “While the appeal for a stay of execution is still being processed, we are calling on the IGP to take urgent action to prevent Edo State from descending into chaos due to one man’s ambition. It is important to recall that Shaibu’s previous attempt led to the unfortunate death of a police officer. One death is already too many, and we must prevent a recurrence of such a tragedy.”

Further elaborating, Osagie revealed that government lawyers have already taken steps by notifying relevant authorities, including the IGP, about the pending stay of execution. In a formal letter, the legal team stressed the importance of maintaining peace and order in the state while the appeal is being heard. The letter emphasized that all efforts to enforce or execute the judgment in suit No. FHC/ABJ/CS/478/2024 should be stayed until the Court of Appeal delivers its verdict on the motion for a stay of execution or injunction pending appeal.

Osagie continued, “The appeal raises several special circumstances, with substantial arguable grounds that warrant the court’s serious consideration. We are confident that the ruling will prevent further unrest once the appeal is heard, and ensure that the former Deputy Governor, Rt. Hon. Philip Shaibu does not take any steps that would lead to a breach of the peace in Benin City or across Edo State.”

This development has sparked widespread concern, and all eyes are now on the unfolding events as the state government urges Shaibu to exercise restraint in the interest of maintaining peace and stability in Edo.
