A Toyota Hiace bus and a vehicle collided fatally early Saturday morning, burning 12 people to death along the Benin-Auchi route.
According to the News Agency of Nigeria, the event happened at Igueoviobo community, close to an army checkpoint on the highway, at approximately five in the morning.
Cyril Mathew, the Edo State Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps, verified the occurrence. Mathew claims that a vehicle traveling towards Auchi hit head-on with the bus that had left Zuba in the Federal Capital Territory on its way to Benin.
None of the victims could be rescued because the bus was completely destroyed by fire after the collision.
“The entire occupants of the bus were killed in the crash,” he stated.
According to him, the tragic accident may have been caused by a driver who was too tired to drive and fell asleep at the wheel.
The deceased were identified by FRSC officials using the vehicle’s passenger manifest, and they have since gotten in touch with their relatives, Mathew said.
He further disclosed that the truck driver and his assistant, commonly referred to as the “Motor Boy,” escaped unhurt.
