The opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has been accused by the government of escalating insecurity in Edo State by equipping thugs prior to the 2024 governorship election and neglecting to disarm them, which has resulted in a spike in violent crimes throughout the state.
Fred Itua, the chief press secretary for Governor Monday Okpebholo, issued a statement warning that these armed organizations still have more than 5,000 illicit firearms, many of which were part of the Edo State Security Network during the previous administration. He claims that these weapons are currently being used to terrify defenseless civilians through violent attacks, kidnappings, and armed robberies.
Itua further claimed that intelligence reports indicate PDP leaders are not only protecting these criminal elements but actively stockpiling additional weapons in anticipation of post-election violence, should their candidate, Asue Ighodalo, lose his case at the election tribunal.
“The former administration deliberately armed these thugs for political purposes, and now they have become a menace to society. Instead of assisting security agencies in recovering these weapons, PDP leaders are providing cover for them. This is a ticking time bomb, and we will not allow Edo to descend into anarchy,” Itua stated.
Security services have been urged by the government to move quickly, seize all illicit weapons, and prosecute those involved. Governor Okpebholo reiterated the administration’s resolve to bring about peace and make sure that no political party or individual is holding the state hostage.
Residents are on edge as security personnel step up their operations, hoping that the government’s dire warning would result in tangible action before things get out of hand.
