Tension at APC Meeting: Fight Breaks Out as Ganduje Refuses to Endorse Shettima for 2027
A stakeholders’ meeting of the All Progressives Congress (APC) for the North-East zone ended in disarray on Sunday after a fight broke out among party delegates. The incident occurred at a gathering meant to promote party unity ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Top APC officials, including National Chairman Dr. Abdullahi Ganduje and North-East Vice Chairman Comrade Mustapha Salihu, were escorted out of the venue under tight security as tensions escalated.
Trouble began shortly after Salihu publicly endorsed President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for a second term in 2027 but failed to mention Vice President Kashim Shettima, a key political figure from the region. His omission sparked outrage among some delegates, particularly those loyal to the Vice President.
Eyewitnesses said that shortly after Salihu’s remarks, delegates began shouting and threatening him, prompting security personnel to evacuate him from the stage to prevent a physical attack.
When Dr. Ganduje later addressed the gathering, he also reportedly failed to acknowledge Vice President Shettima in his speech. Instead, he praised Tinubu’s leadership, a move that further fueled anger in the already tense room.
Some members of the audience booed and heckled the APC national chairman. A few were seen grabbing at his attire, forcing security operatives to intervene and escort him out of the venue swiftly.
Efforts by other senior party leaders to restore calm were unsuccessful, and the meeting was abruptly ended.
The incident has intensified speculations about a possible shakeup in the APC’s 2027 ticket. Rumors are circulating within party ranks that the leadership may consider replacing Vice President Shettima with a Christian Northerner to address the ongoing concerns about religious balance. One name reportedly being discussed is former Speaker of the House of Representatives, Yakubu Dogara, although no official confirmation has been issued.
What was expected to be a show of party strength in the region has instead highlighted internal cracks that the APC may need to address quickly as it looks ahead to the next general election.
The party has yet to issue an official statement regarding Sunday’s events.
