In Ughiekha community, Etsako West LGA, Edo State, students at Ikiroda Primary School are compelled to learn in classrooms that flood during the rainy season, without tables or chairs, and under a roof that is barely there.
Despite billions spent on the Edo BEST educational plan, the school remains in ruins, raising major concerns about the state government’s commitment to education.
The school was first constructed under former Governor Adams Oshiomhole, but because inferior materials were used, it has deteriorated. Children are forced to learn in hazardous conditions in classrooms with shattered windows, damaged flooring, and crumbling PVC ceilings.
“The most alarming issue is the leaking roof, which renders the school unusable during the rainy season,” civic technology platform, MonitNG, stated.
“Instead of providing a conducive learning space, the classrooms become flooded, forcing pupils to stay at home.”
The organisation mentioned how this situation has led to a drastic decline in school attendance.
“This situation is unacceptable, especially considering the billions of Naira allocated for the Edo BEST educational programme.”
Monitng questioned the government’s handling of education funds, adding, “Despite these investments, Ikiroda Primary School remains in ruins, raising serious concerns about the government’s priorities.”
Calling for immediate intervention, Monitng urged Governor Monday Okpebholo and Deputy Governor Idahosa Dennis to address the crisis.
“This includes replacing the damaged roofing, fixing the classrooms, and providing essential furniture to support effective learning.”
“The children of the Ughiekha community deserve better, and it is the government’s responsibility to ensure they receive the quality education promised to them,” the statement continued.
Monitng insisted that the Edo State Government must prioritise the rehabilitation of the school. “We call for swift intervention to rescue the school from its current state and give these children a chance at a brighter future.”
The group concluded, “Education should not be a privilege but a right, and it is time to ensure that every child in Edo State has access to safe and conducive learning environments.”
