The Peoples Democratic Party’s Edo State chapter’s caretaker committee confirmed on Tuesday that it remains in command of the party’s operations in the state.
When the state executive committee’s term ended, Henry Tenebe, the committee’s secretary, informed South-South reporters that the party’s National Working Committee decided it was prudent to form a caretaker committee because the 2024 governorship race was quickly approaching.
Tenebe further mentioned that the PDP’s executive committee typically has a four-year term, with the most recent executive’s term ending in March 2024.
He pointed out that in accordance with the party’s constitution, the NWC also established a caretaker committee to manage the party’s operations in Edo until the congress is held.
He stated that the South-South zonal committee’s term also ended on March 9, 2025, and that the NWC has since appointed Chief Emmanuel Ogidi as the chairman of a seven-member committee to oversee party operations in the region, encouraging party members to keep cooperating with the 10-member state caretaker committee, which has been approved by the national body of the party.
He said, “This is to tell party members that the caretaker committee, headed by Dr Tony Aziegbemi is still in charge of running the affairs of the party in the state.”
“The NWC, in line with the party’s constitution also set up the caretaker committee to run the affairs of the party in the state until such a time a congress is conducted.”
Recall that the PDP stated that Dr. Tony Aziegbemi would serve as the committee’s chairman in a letter dated November 6, 2024, written by Umar Bature, the National Organizing Secretary, and sent to Godwin Obaseki, the state’s most recent governor. Tenebe will be the secretary.
Other members are Harrison Omagbon, Fidel Igenegbale, Chris Nehikhare, Tony Anenih (Jr), Archbishop Anthony Okosun, Segun Saiki, Adezat Ibrahim, and Augustine Edosomwan.
The letter reads, “We wish to inform Your Excellency that the National Working Committee of our great party, the Peoples Democratic Party, has, on behalf of the National Executive Committee, under Section 29 (2Xb) of our Constitution (2017 as amended), approved the appointment of the 10 members as Edo State Caretaker Committee members.”
“Accordingly, the committee is charged with the responsibility of running the affairs of the party in Edo State, as stipulated in Section 21(2)(a-b) of our party’s Constitution for a period not exceeding 90 days or till a new executive committee is elected.”
