Osakpolor Edebor, a 32-year-old infamous cult leader in Edo State, has been captured by state command agents.
In Auchi, Etsako West Local Government Area of the State, Edebor, who was allegedly on the police “wanted list,” was taken into custody.
The suspect is said to be a member of a group of gunmen who pose as members of a covert cult. Dozens of people have been killed in the State’s continuing, violent conflicts between competing fraternity groups.
According to reports, Edebor led an attack on a Cyril in Benin City’s Uwelu market, during which the victim was decapitated.
After then, the suspect allegedly fled Benin and took refuge in Auchi. He allegedly joined a group of online scammers at a “yahoo yahoo academy” while he was in Auchi, according to information obtained.
It was also learned that Edebor was arrested by the police during their raid on the academy because of the gang’s fraudulent activities in Auchi.
After that, he was taken to the Benin City Police Headquarters’ State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) for additional examination. Edebor was implicated as Cyril’s accused killer in Uwelu after a police probe.
The suspect who confessed to the crime said he took part in Cyril’s death to avenge the death of his member he simply identified as Lagbaja.
Edebor who confessed to the crime said: “I was arrested in Auchi where I was doing yahoo yahoo after a disagreement over the sharing of the proceeds.
“Someone withheld our #6 million shares after he had taken his own share of the proceeds.
“So, I and others violently stormed his House in a bid to recover the money. People then called the police and we were arrested.
“It was when we got to the police station that information filtered out that I was in custody. That was how the cult matter was added.”
The State Commissioner of Police, Mr Umoru Ozigi said other gang members now at large, have been identified.
Ozigi stated that those at large would be arrested soon. He commended residents for volunteering information that has helped to tame the cultism menace in the State.
