At the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium in Benin City on Monday, Hon. Amadin Desmond Enabulele, Executive Chairman of the Edo State Sports Commission, accepted the Unity Torch for the Niger Delta Sports Festival.
He then accompanied a group of athletes and torchbearers to the Government House, where he gave the Unity Torch to Hon. Dennis Idahosa, the Deputy Governor, who was filling in for Governor Monday Okpebholo.
In his remarks, Idahosa expressed gratitude, saying, “We thank Hon. Enabulele for his prolific performance at the commission. On behalf of Governor Okpebholo, I wish you all resounding victories in this event. The government has placed significant emphasis on sports development, and by the grace of God, we will provide all the necessary support needed to win this competition and bring medals to Edo State.”
The deputy governor also took the opportunity to appreciate the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) for their efforts and partnership, which aligns with Governor Okpebholo’s vision for sports development in Edo State.
In his speech, Hon. Enabulele emphasised the significance of the festival, stating, “This event will provide a platform to identify and harness sports talents across the nine mandate states. We are not only participating; we are heading to Uyo to win.”
He reaffirmed the commission’s commitment to identifying and nurturing young athletes in line with Governor Okpebholo’s vision for sports development, disclosing that, “Only grassroots athletes from within various communities and local governments have been selected to compete, ready to engage with other athletes nationally and internationally.”
Enabulele promised that Edo State will take part in 11 athletic events and mentioned that the state trials are currently being organized after the local government trials were finished. This is an example of the governor’s “Catch Them Young” program.
“Participants will compete in various sports, showcasing outstanding athletes and providing pathways for their growth,” he said, adding that, “This festival is an opportunity to highlight the sporting potential of our youth and promote healthy competition and sportsmanship.”
On March 21, 2025, in Yenagoa, Bayelsa State, the ceremonial event started with a vibrant ceremony at Samson Siasia Stadium. The NDDC-funded event, which will be held in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, from April 1–8, 2025, is expected to draw 3,000 athletes and 500 instructors.
