On Thursday, Mr. Bambo Akani, the founder and CEO of MTN’s Making of Champions (MOC), said that 2,056 athletes have successfully signed up to compete in the third season of MTN Champs in Benin City.
During a media meeting to announce the three-day track events, Akani said that the competition’s inaugural season was held in Benin City, where undeveloped talent was found. He went on to say that some of the gifted athletes who have been identified through the competitions thus far are currently receiving full scholarships in the US.
In terms of athletics, he said he is confident the gifted athletes he has found will represent the nation with pride both domestically and abroad.
Speaking as well, Mr. Osaze Ebueku, Senior Manager, Sponsorship and Go-To-Market (GTM), stated that MTN is the only company capable of identifying rough diamonds and refining them into global champions. They are excited to be back in Benin City to find more talent that will be showcased to the world, he added.
Sen. Monday Okpebholo, the governor of Edo State, stated that his administration supports grassroots sports development.
The governor, who was represented by Mr. Amadin Desmond Enabulele, the chairman of the state sports commission, stated that he has kindly approved the use of Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium and other logistics to ensure a successful event in the state as a way of showing his love for grassroots sports, catching the kids early, and supporting the MTN project.
