Igarra, the administrative center of the Akoko Edo Local Government Area (LGA), Edo State, was ecstatic as Adeche Momoh University (AMU), the first private institution in the area, approached the start of classes.
Residents of Akoko Edo have long yearned for development as a result of the government’s lack of presence in the area. AMU’s founding is currently hailed as a revolutionary move that has the potential to change the educational environment in the area.
In a statement provided to yesterday, the university’s founder, Professor James Adeche Momoh, voiced confidence in the institution’s preparedness after National Universities Commission (NUC) officials inspected its facilities.
“The visiting NUC officials are impressed with what they have seen,” Momoh told newsmen. “This is the first university of its kind in Igarra and the entire Akoko Edo region. Our institution will be guided by excellence, innovation, entrepreneurship, and creativity. We aim to be one of the best universities in Nigeria.”
A then Chairman of the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC), Momoh emphasized that AMU’s mission is to bring quality education closer to the people of Igarra.
“Education, knowledge, and capacity must be shared,” he said. “While I have been on a journey of learning and knowledge-sharing, I realize that my people in Igarra also need access to quality education. We want to establish a strong foundation in engineering, technical studies, computer science, and law, among other emerging fields.”
He also outlined plans to teach aspiring attorneys and legal professionals in order to support legal education. Momoh expressed appreciation for the NUC team’s visit and gave them his word that any issues brought up during the inspection will be resolved.
Additionally, he expressed gratitude to the residents of Akoko Edo and Edo State in general for their assistance in bringing the institution to fruition. AMU will provide degree programs in four major colleges: Arts and Social Sciences, Engineering, Computer Science, and Law, in addition to Entrepreneurial Studies, according to university board member Professor Mariam Omenun Ibrahim.
“This university started as a dream, and today, it is becoming a reality. It is a lasting legacy for future generations. In the coming years, we plan to establish a medical school, and we envision AMU gaining global recognition,” she said.
The host community has warmly embraced the university’s arrival, with residents expressing their excitement and gratitude to Momoh for his dedication to education in the region.
“We have waited so long for a project like this,” one resident said. “Now that it is here, we are ready to support it fully.”
Others promised to put aside disagreements and cooperate in order to make the institution, which would be the first university in Igarra and Akoko Edo, a success.
The Akoko-Edo community is optimistic that AMU would not only offer high-quality education but also promote social and economic advancement in the area as it gets ready to launch.
