In accordance with the state’s 2022 Disability Rights Law, the Joint National Association of Persons with Disabilities (JONAPWD) and other stakeholders have called on the Edo government to create a disability commission.
Ann Okufuwa, the chairperson of JONAPWD, discussed the importance of equity and inclusivity, adding that a person with a disability should lead the commission.
JONAPWD president Abdullahi Usman denounced discrimination against PWDs across the country, citing inaccessible public buildings and exclusion. He echoed the idea that PWDs should be granted the same privileges as able members of society.
Imonitie Omokhodion, speaking on behalf of the Rule of Law and Anti-Corruption Programme (RuLAC), criticized the sluggish implementation of disability laws and urged ongoing advocacy.
He emphasized how RuLAC helped pass the state’s disability law. Blessing Agbebaku, speaker of the Edo State House of Assembly, who was represented by Odike Iroube, committed to engaging with the disability community.
He said he is committed to resolving fiscal resources for disability problems.
Panel talks centered on fostering an inclusive culture and supporting anti-discrimination in the workplace, healthcare system, and educational system. In order to protect PWDs’ rights and dignity in the state, participants emphasized the necessity of taking decisive action.
