As the Niger Delta Sports Festival in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, draws to a close on Tuesday (today), the Edo State delegation is vying for top place.
With 68 medals as of Monday—12 gold, 32 silver, and 24 bronze—Team Edo was in fourth place and was on track to win more after making it to the finals of numerous competitions.
Nonetheless, the squad has received praise from Amadin Enabulele, executive chairman of the Edo State Sports Commission, for maintaining discipline, perseverance, consistency, and the spirit of sportsmanship throughout the festival.
According to Enabulele, who made this announcement in a press release issued by his media assistant Wilson Edoko, squad Edo has been given the chance to develop a strong squad and form friendships in preparation for the National Sports Festival, which is set for May in Abeokuta, Ogun State.
“I commend Team Edo for upholding discipline, resilience, consistency, and the spirit of sportsmanship at the festival. This event has given Team Edo the opportunity to build friendships, promote unity, and showcase their talents. The tournament will help the team address its weaknesses and build on the successes already achieved.”
“Beyond winning medals, this event is an opportunity to build a formidable team for the upcoming National Sports Festival, scheduled for May in Abeokuta, Ogun State.”
“In athletics, aquatics, para powerlifting, para-athletics, boxing, football, discus, javelin, handball, and swimming, Team Edo has maintained dominance,” the statement noted.
More than 3,400 athletes from the nine Niger Delta states competed in the sports event.
