A 28-year-old online scammer from Edo State’s Oredo Local Government Area has expressed regret for his illegal actions. The remorseful cybercriminal claimed that his fear of being arrested was the reason he gave up his illegal lifestyle.
The Edo native, whose identity was withheld, voluntarily reported himself to the EFCC’s Benin Zonal Directorate, where he was welcomed by the commission’s Acting Zonal Director and Assistant Commander, Effam Okim, the Economic and Financial Crime Commission said in a statement on Friday.
The remorseful scammer was reported in the statement signed by Dele Oyewale, Head of Media and Publicity, as stating, “I reported myself because I wanted to stop and turn a new leaf.”
The scammer claimed in the statement that he was an expert in romance scams that preyed on victims from other countries prior to his surrender.
He claimed that he used messaging apps that enabled him to talk in Chinese to create fictitious emotional ties while posing as a Chinese doctor working in a war-torn nation.
He acknowledged taking advantage of gullible people by employing charm and phony declarations of love.
“I tell my victims that I am from China and that I work as a medical doctor in a war-torn country. I communicate with them in Chinese using a mobile app translator. I profess love for them by telling them how beautiful and attractive they are,” he said.
