In a statement released in Benin on Friday, CSP Moses Yamu, the command’s public relations officer, confirmed the arrests of 14 suspects in connection with the horrific killing of 16 travelers and the burning of their truck in Udune Efandion.
The incident happened on Thursday along the Uromi/Obajana Expressway and has caused widespread outrage and calls for justice. Yamu denounced the killings and gave the public his word that justice would be served.
“The command is committed to ensuring justice for the victims. No stone will be left unturned in the ongoing investigation,” Yamu stated.
According to the police, a truck transporting 25 travellers from Elele, Rivers State, was intercepted by a vigilante group in Uromi.
“During the stop, some travellers were found with locally made dane guns, which raised suspicion among the vigilante members,” Yamu explained.
He described how emotions rose after some vigilante members sounded the alarm, claiming that the travelers were suspected of kidnapping. 16 of the residents were attacked and lynched by angry neighbors and bystanders as soon as the claim sparked mob action.
After hearing reports of concern, Uromi Division police officers rushed on the site. Ten of the travelers, two of whom were injured, were successfully rescued. After being quickly taken to a hospital, the injured victims are currently responding to treatment.
“In the course of investigations, 14 suspects have been arrested in connection with the crime. An emergency meeting was also convened with stakeholders and community members,” Yamu said.
In the meantime, a Police Mobile Force unit and other tactical teams have been sent to the area to quell additional disturbances.
Betty Otimenyin, Edo’s commissioner of police, has urged citizens to cooperate with law enforcement and embrace peaceful coexistence.
“She also cautioned against any form of reprisal attacks or unlawful gatherings that could escalate tensions,” Yamu concluded.
