Benin City, September 20, 2025 – The Edo State Internal Revenue Service (EIRS) has sealed the premises of Market Square (Sunday Foods) in Benin City over unpaid taxes amounting to ₦27,005,117.97.
The enforcement action was confirmed in a statement issued by Courage Eboigbe, Head of Corporate Communications at EIRS.
According to the agency, the outstanding liability arose from an audit of Market Square’s operations between 2018 and 2023, which covered Pay-As-You-Earn (PAYE) and Withholding Tax obligations.
Eboigbe explained that the tax assessment was duly communicated to the company, which did not raise any objection, making the assessment final and conclusive.
He added that despite reminders, Market Square failed to settle the debt, prompting the EIRS to secure a court order to seal the premises in line with enforcement procedures.
“The EIRS is prepared to unseal the premises immediately upon confirmation of full payment,” Eboigbe said.
The agency stressed that payment of taxes is a fundamental civic responsibility of individuals and businesses in Edo State, adding that tax revenues remain critical for government to provide infrastructure and public services.
Eboigbe also noted that compliance with tax obligations enhances business credibility and strengthens corporate reputation.
The revenue agency commended taxpayers who remain compliant and urged defaulters to settle their liabilities promptly.
