Edo Governor Summons Contractor Over Slow Benin–Sapele Road Project
Benin City, Edo State – Governor Monday Okpebholo has summoned the contractor handling the reconstruction of the Benin–Sapele Road, expressing frustration over the slow pace of work despite funds already released.
A statement from his Chief Press Secretary, Fred Itua, on Monday said the governor decided after personally driving through the over 20-kilometre stretch. He stopped at several locations to inspect the drainage system, pavement, and construction materials being used.
Okpebholo, visibly displeased, noted that residents continue to suffer due to the delays. He stopped at key points, including Peanut Junction, Ogheghe Junction by Akenuwa Community, Ogheghe Road, and the Old Road section abandoned by past administrations.
“The work is solid and good, but the speed is unacceptable. People are suffering because of the slow pace, and something must be done to make the road motorable and reduce the hardship on our people,” the governor said.
He stressed the importance of proper drainage, warning that the current design was incomplete. According to him, the system must be extended beyond the town to ensure water is properly channeled and desilted, guaranteeing a lasting road after completion.
The governor added that work on a second 7km segment would soon commence but insisted on a review of the drainage plan before continuation.
“Drainage is key. If water is not taken out of the town properly, the road will not last. We will correct the design to make sure this project is sustainable,” Okpebholo explained.
He reassured residents that his administration will push for faster delivery, promising to hold contractors accountable to meet expectations.
