Edo State Governor, Senator Monday Okpebholo, has approved a N1 billion annual bursary scheme for Edo indigenes studying in tertiary institutions across Nigeria. The announcement was made during a recent town hall meeting with young people in the state.
Edotoday gathered that the bursary program, which is set to become an annual initiative, is aimed at easing the financial burden on students and their families. It comes in response to growing calls from youth leaders urging the government to support students pursuing higher education.
Governor Okpebholo, who has spent less than eight months in office, described the initiative as a strategic investment in the state’s future.
“This is our way of encouraging Edo students to keep striving for academic success. We are committed to removing the financial barriers that stand between them and their goals,” he said.
He emphasized that only verified indigenes of Edo State will be eligible for the bursary, with verification to be conducted through the Local Government of Origin to ensure transparency and fairness.
The governor also reaffirmed his administration’s broader commitment to education and youth empowerment:
“We believe in the power of education to transform not just individuals, but the entire state. This bursary is part of our plan to build a better Edo.”
