Governor Monday Okpebholo of Edo State has approved the removal of Dr. Maureen Ekhoragbon as the Chairperson of the Edo State Senior Secondary Education Board, with immediate effect.

The decision was announced on Monday in a statement by the Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Ikhilor Musa, who also confirmed the appointment of Dr. Rita Otibho Erewele as Ekhoragbon’s successor.

While the statement did not specify reasons for Ekhoragbon’s dismissal, it described Erewele as “an accomplished educationist and administrator” with more than two decades of experience in Nigeria’s education sector.

According to the SSG, “Dr. Erewele holds a PhD in Educational Administration and Planning, along with master’s and bachelor’s degrees in Education from the University of Benin.”

She has served in various capacities as a lecturer, education consultant, and senior education officer, earning recognition for her contributions to policy development, teacher training, and curriculum improvement in the Nigerian education system.

Edo Government Strengthens Education Sector

The appointment comes as part of Governor Okpebholo’s broader effort to reform and strengthen education in Edo State.

Earlier this month, the state government announced the absorption of 4,000 volunteer teachers under the EdoStar Teaching Programme and the recruitment of 500 new teachers to address shortages in public schools.

The Commissioner for Education, Dr. Paddy Iyamu, stated that the move underscores the governor’s commitment to rewarding dedication and improving learning outcomes across the state.

“Come October 15, we are going to present letters of appointment to about 4,000 EdoStar volunteer teachers who have been teaching for the past three years,” Iyamu said.

About the New Chair, Dr. Rita Erewele

Dr. Erewele is widely respected for her leadership in educational planning and reform, having worked on initiatives that promote teacher professionalism, curriculum innovation, and educational policy advancement.

Her appointment is expected to bring renewed direction to the Edo State Senior Secondary Education Board as the state continues to prioritize quality education and human capital development.
