Edo Governor Urges FG Intervention in Boundary Dispute with Delta
Following the Edo – Delta Boundary dispute, EdoToday reports that the Edo State Governor, Monday Okpebholor, has called on the Federal Government to urgently intervene in the ongoing boundary dispute between Edo and Delta states to prevent possible communal clashes.
Okpebholo, represented by his deputy, Dennis Idahosa, appealed on Wednesday during a fact-finding visit to the disputed areas, accompanied by security chiefs and senior government officials.
He warned companies and individuals against taking advantage of the unsettled boundary matter to encroach on Edo territory, noting that the case was already before the National Boundary Commission (NBC) for adjudication.
The disputed area lies between Urhonigbe community in Orhionmwon Local Government Area of Edo State and Umutu community in Ukwuani Local Government Area of Delta State.

The visit followed reports of alleged incursions by the Delta State government and attempts by private firms to establish operations on the contested land.
Addressing residents of Urhonigbe, the governor assured them of his administration’s commitment to defending Edo’s rights and interests but urged restraint pending the NBC’s decision.
“We appeal to the Federal Government and President Bola Tinubu to direct the NBC to expedite action so this issue can be resolved once and for all,” Okpebholo said.
“This River Ethiope is a natural boundary. We don’t want any crisis in the South-South or between Edo and Delta states. We are brothers, having once been Bendel State. We want peace, and we want the right thing done quickly.”
The governor emphasised that while Edo would defend its territorial integrity, it would do so within the framework of peace, fairness, and due process.
Assistant Inspector-General of Police, Zone 5, Salman-Dogo Garba, also urged residents to remain calm, stressing that both states remained partners in peace and development despite the dispute.
“I appeal to the communities: Edo and Delta are still brothers despite this disagreement. Be peaceful, avoid violence, and don’t take up arms over this matter as it is already before the NBC,” Garba said.
