A man named Theophilus Osazuwa has been taken into custody by the Edo State Police Command on suspicion of killing his four-year-old kid.
It is believed that Osazuwa was under the influence of heavy narcotics when he committed the crime.
In a statement released on Wednesday, Moses Yamu, the command’s spokesperson, said the event happened at approximately 12:30 p.m. on Tuesday. Yamu clarified that the fatal incident was caused by Osazuwa allegedly going into a trance after returning to his apartment in Ogbeson Quarters, which is located off Benin-Agbor Road in Benin City.
He clarified that the defendant allegedly yelled, “Holy Ghost fire,” while in a trance before snatching his four-year-old son and smashing him against a wall, which killed the child.
The statement read, “Edo Police Command has arrested one Theophilus Osazuwa of Ogbeson Quarters off Benin-Agbor Road, Benin City, for the murder of his four-year-old son named Testimony Osazuwa.
“The suspect was said to have arrived at his home at about 12:30 hrs, went berserk screaming ‘Holy Ghost fire,’ then reached for the four-year-old boy and slammed him to the wall. The child was rushed to the hospital but was pronounced dead on arrival.
“Preliminary investigation revealed that the young man who is known for the consumption of illicit (colloquial, ice, etc.) substances must have acted under the influence of the same.”
Yamu added that the state police commissioner, Umoru Ozigi, warned youths about the dangers of using illicit substances and drugs, highlighting their harmful impact on health and the risks they pose to both their lives and public safety.
