The Governor of Edo State, Senator Monday Okpebholo, has called on Mr. Asue Ighodalo, the candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the September 21, 2024, gubernatorial election, to accept the verdict of the Court of Appeal delivered on Thursday and put an end to what he described as the persistent abuse of court processes.
The Court of Appeal upheld Governor Okpebholo’s victory, affirming the earlier decision of the Elections Petitions Tribunal, which declared him the rightful winner of the 2024 Edo Governorship Election. The judgment came after a thorough and transparent review of submissions from all parties involved.
“This verdict is a reaffirmation of the overwhelming mandate freely and fairly given to me by the people of Edo State,” Governor Okpebholo stated. “It is also a victory for democracy, for justice, and for the rule of law. I commend the judiciary for standing firm and resisting distractions aimed at derailing the will of the people.”
He further appealed to Mr. Ighodalo to respect the outcome of the judicial process and abandon what he termed a fruitless pursuit of power through endless litigation.
“Now that the legal process has run its full course, it is time for all Edo sons and daughters, regardless of political affiliation, to work together to move our dear state forward. My administration remains open and inclusive, committed to the People First agenda. I have repeatedly extended a hand of fellowship to all, including my opponents. Let us focus on governance, not grudges,” the Governor said.
Governor Okpebholo also referenced reports of a political rift between Mr. Ighodalo and his former backer, Governor Godwin Obaseki, noting that Edo people deserve leaders who will prioritize the collective interest over personal ambition and political calculations.
“We cannot afford to be distracted by those whose only plan is to contest the people’s decision in perpetuity. The business of governance is urgent, and our commitment to deliver on key areas like infrastructure, education, healthcare, and economic empowerment is stronger than ever.”
The Governor called on all citizens of Edo State to remain law-abiding and united in the pursuit of progress. He assured the public that his government will not be deterred by political noise and will intensify efforts to improve the lives of all residents.
