The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) state chapter has been charged by the Edo State administration with engaging in resentful and dishonest tactics to undermine Governor Monday Okhepolo.
The government has threatened legal action if the opposition party immediately stops engaging in such behavior. The administration claimed that a false remark attributed to Chris Osa Nehikhare, the state’s PDP publicity secretary, was the reason the warning was required.
In a statement, Fred Itua, Governor Monday Okpebholo’s chief press secretary, said the PDP spreads unfounded rumors to mislead the public on issues it obviously doesn’t comprehend.
The government criticized the opposition party for its persistent obsession with spreading false information about the governor and the state government, which is led by the All Progressives Congress. It described the PDP’s acts as the frequent outbursts of a party drowning.
“It is hypocritical for the same PDP that has consistently desecrated the rule of law through executive impunity and abuse of office to now quote the Electoral Act in a dishonest attempt to score cheap political points.”
“The Edo PDP is in no moral position to lecture anyone on constitutional order or democratic values. Their tenure in power was defined by deceit, maladministration, and a relentless assault on truth and transparency.”
“Let it also be noted that at the appropriate time, the PDP and its officials will be held accountable for the spurious allegations they have repeatedly made against Governor Monday Okpebholo of Edo State and other public officials.”
“Enough is enough. These unfounded and unsubstantiated claims have no bearing on the truth, and they constitute a deliberate effort to mislead the public, disrupt governance, and cause disaffection in the state,” the government stated.
