A 14-year-old kid named Okonkwo Obinna Emmanuel died in Iyamu Village in Illushi, Esan South East Local Government Area of Edo State, while attempting to test the effectiveness of a “bulletproof” charm that was supposed to make him impervious to physical assaults.
This is a strange tragedy. A bottle was shattered on the teen’s head during a charm test on April 2, 2025, a startling event that turned deadly.
Amechi Edozunor, a self-described native doctor, and his accomplice, Kelvin Ugru, are accused of orchestrating the ceremony. The two allegedly promised the youngster invincibility and attempted to demonstrate it by smashing a bottle on his head.
However, the charm was a huge failure. Obinna suffered a serious head injury and collapsed as a result of the incident. Despite being rushed to a nearby hospital, he succumbed to his injuries three days later, on April 5.
Okonkwo Onyenbuchi, the deceased’s older brother, informed the local police about the horrifying incident. Since then, Edozunor and Ugru have both been taken into custody in relation to the boy’s passing.
CSP Moses Yamu, the Edo State Police Command Public Relations Officer, stated at the time of publication that he had not yet received all the information on the incident, but he promised to send updates as soon as he did from the division in charge of the matter.
The unsettling episode has sent the peaceful community into grief and rekindled worries about the risky increase in fetish behavior among young people in Nigeria.
