Senator Monday Okpebholo, the governor of Edo State, has declared his intention to look into the $10 million that former governor Godwin Obaseki reportedly spent on redesigning The Nigerian Observer, the state newspaper.
When Okpebholo and his colleagues unexpectedly visited the newspaper’s location, they were startled to discover that it was locked, preventing them from looking at the machines that the previous administration had reportedly bought.
Obaseki has shut down the once-thriving media outlet to renovate it and make it competitive with national dailies. However, the newspaper has remained non-operational rather than improved.
Okpebholo voiced his displeasure and asked where the alleged investment was located, claiming that there was no proof of any work being done or employees on the property.
He pledged to return and personally inspect the buildings to verify the existence of the equipment allegedly bought with taxpayers’ money.
“Edo people need to ask what happened to their money spent on revamping The Observer Newspaper,” the governor said.
