The first leg of Season 3 of MTN CHAMPS, which was held in Benin, was dominated by three teams. The athletics classics’ top performers were Government Model, Delta Secondary School, and Vision High.
With 50 points, Delta Secondary School defeated Ado Girls, who had 33 points, to take first place in the Cadet (U-14) Girls’ category. SAM-KAY came in third with 20 points. With 86 points, Government Model Asaba easily defeated Benin Technical, who finished in second place with 43 points, in the boys’ division of the same division.
The outstanding achievements of Daniel Okwokwo and David Ekunwe, who won gold and silver in the 200-, 400-, and long-jumping events, gave them a boost. Saint John the Apostle rounded out the podium with 34 points.
With a remarkable 102 points, Vision High defeated other schools to win the Youth (U-17) Girls’ title. Blessing Ezeh was the team’s top scorer, scoring 20 points with a double in the shot put and discus throw. With 39 points, The Lord’s Own International School came in second, while Osadenis came in third with 31 points.
Vision High added to their overall success with a third-place finish of 28 points, while Government Model carried over their victory in the Cadet Boys’ category to the Youth, winning 58 points ahead of Beje High School with 35 points. Delta State put up a dominant display in the Junior (U-20) Team event, scoring 162 points to take home the team championship.
With the help of Bosa David Kosisochukwu and Success Okeleke, the former was able to sweep the throws, winning two gold medals in the shot put and javelin and a bronze in the discus throw. They finished well ahead of HIT with 94 points, while Global Power came in third with 79 points.
In the Senior Team category, Bayelsa and the hosts, Edo, faced off, with Team Bayelsa winning with 114 points, Edo finishing second with 87 points, and Team MTN finishing third with 48 points. The CHAMPS train now anticipates an exciting stop in Lagos from April 9th to 12th for the second leg.
