The murder of 18-year-old Chinedu Abimbor by police on Thursday in Ekpoma, Edo State, has been harshly denounced by Amnesty International.
According to information obtained, a police patrol squad shot and killed Chinedu, escalating worries about police violence in Nigeria.
The killing was characterized by the human rights organization on Friday as more proof of the Nigerian police’s abuse of force and disrespect for the law.
“For decades, the Nigerian police have been targeting youth with utter disregard for justice and accountability. It is unacceptable that, despite repeated promises of reform, law enforcement officers continue to act with impunity, fostering a climate of fear and corruption,” Amnesty International stated.
To guarantee that those involved are held accountable, the group has encouraged Nigerian authorities to carry out an impartial and open inquiry into the occurrence.
Nigerians are demanding an end to extrajudicial executions and security force violence, and the most recent example has rekindled calls for police reform in the country.
