On Thursday, the administration of Edo University in Iyamho declared that 51 students had already received N61.4 million from the Nigeria Education Loan Fund, or NELFUND.
During a sensitization workshop for students in the Edo North Senatorial District, Prof. Dawood Egbefo, the university’s acting vice-chancellor, revealed this information.
To encourage students to benefit from the initiative, NELFUND organized the event in collaboration with the Edo State Ministry of Education.
“It will interest you to know that since subscribing to the NELFUND programme, the sum of N61.4 million has been disbursed, with 51 students as beneficiaries.”
“Today’s sensitisation programme serves as an opportunity for us to explore how NELFUND can continue to serve as a beacon of hope for students in Edo State.”
“I encourage all participants to take full advantage of this platform so that they can maximise the benefits of these funds,” he said.
He praised Bola Tinubu for his support in fostering the growth and advancement of education in Nigeria.
“I would like to express our deep gratitude to President Tinubu for his leadership and unwavering support for the growth of education in Nigeria, as well as his vision for a more prosperous and well-educated nation,” he added.
The low number of Edo students asking for the loan, however, infuriated Dr. Paddy Iyamu, the Edo State Commissioner for Education. He encouraged students to participate in the program, pointing out that there are still not many beneficiaries in the state.
“We have cause to be concerned, which is why we are holding this sensitisation programme—to bring our people up to speed so they can benefit from this laudable initiative, which will be highly beneficial to them,” he stated.
