In a bold move to reclaim state-owned assets, the Edo State Government has sealed a borrow pit in the Lagos Street axis of Benin City, Oredo Local Government Area, of the state till further notice.
This decisive action was taken by the Coordinator of the Taskforce for Protection of Government Property, Hon. Okoloise Eugene, and his team Tuesday.
The borrow pit, which is supposed to generate revenue for the state government, had allegedly been taken over by some strangers who built shops on the premises.
Investigations revealed that during the previous administration, these individuals allegedly bribed personnel who were supposed to report the illegal occupation to the government.
According to investigations, these people allegedly bought off officials who were meant to inform the authorities about the unlawful occupation during the previous administration.
In order to potentially recapture the encroached land, the state government, which is dedicated to making sure that its resources are used for the benefit of all inhabitants rather than being abused by a select few for personal gain, besieges the location.
An important step in safeguarding public resources and making sure they are put to their proper uses is the closing of the Oredo borrow pit. This decision, according to the task force, illustrates the state government’s commitment to transparency, accountability, and good governance.
The state government has persisted in taking strong action against corruption and poor administration of the commonwealth owned by all of its residents.
“The people of the state can expect a new era of transparency, accountability, and good governance,” the taskforce noted.
