A tragedy occurred on Thursday as a middle-aged man perished after he was struck by a fallen transmission mast at the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium.
The mast had fallen on the man during a severe breeze that followed a downpour that ruined a praise night planned as part of events to honor Governor Monday Okpebholo’s 100 days in office.
The man was claimed to be the driver of the decorator and was killed by the mast when he tried to save his boss’s decorating goods.
News reporters were informed by a police officer at the scene, who asked not to be named, that the victim was struck by the mast because of the strong wind.
The officer said, “We were all gathered at the stadium waiting for the commencement of the praise night when the breeze began. Unfortunately, the mast fell and killed the man instantly. His head was shattered and it was a gory sight.
“I gathered that he was a driver to the person who was at the stadium to decorate the venue. Most people had to leave the stadium after the rain subsided.”
Moses Yamu, the spokesperson for the Edo State Police Command, did not answer multiple calls to his line, so attempts to confirm with him were unsuccessful.
