The Director General of EDHIC, Mrs. Augusta Ikpea-Enaholo, made the commitment when she asked the Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Dr. Lucky Eseigbe, for support during her official visit to the Commissioner on Friday, February 14th, 2025, in Benin City.
Mrs. Ikpea-Enaholo emphasized the importance of local governments in raising awareness and enrollment in the Edo State Health Insurance Scheme (EdoHIS), especially for rural communities and workers in the informal sector.
She also mentioned that increasing participation in the scheme would improve service delivery and guarantee the long-term sustainability of health insurance coverage in the State.
“The local government system is pivotal in ensuring that every Edo resident, especially those in underserved areas, has access to quality and affordable healthcare. By strengthening our partnership, we can expand enrollment, improve service delivery, and secure sustainable healthcare access for all,” she stated.
Dr. Lucky Eseigbe complimented EDHIC’s work in improving healthcare access in Edo State and reaffirmed the Ministry’s commitment to supporting the Health Insurance Scheme. He pledged that local governments would play active roles in sensitization and enrollment drives to ensure that healthcare reaches every community.
“We acknowledge the significance of health insurance in enhancing healthcare outcomes,” the commissioner said. Through this partnership, we will be able to provide the State’s Health Insurance Scheme to more people at the local level.
Strategic approaches to improve healthcare delivery at the grassroots level were also discussed. Collaborative sensitization campaigns to raise public knowledge of the advantages of health insurance, improving healthcare facilities in rural regions, and incorporating local government structures into EDHIC’s operational framework to guarantee smooth service delivery were among the main areas of attention. Both sides concurred that reaching the state’s objectives for universal health coverage would need a well-coordinated strategy.
Residents are urged to fully utilize the Edo State Health Insurance Scheme as EDHIC continues to interact with important stakeholders. Individuals and families can obtain high-quality, reasonably priced healthcare without experiencing financial hardship by signing up for the program. In the pursuit of a healthier Edo State, the Commission is steadfast in its resolve to increase coverage, enhance service delivery, and guarantee that no person is left behind.
