Some students from the Edo South senatorial district have received scholarships from the Osaide for Girls in Science and Engineering Foundation. Senior Secondary School (SSS) students in Edo State and 300-level engineering undergraduates from the University of Benin (UNIBEN) are among the beneficiaries.
While the secondary school students received N50,000 each, along with necessary school supplies like uniforms, sportswear, shoes, books, a laptop, and mathematical sets, among other materials, the undergraduate recipients each received a N250,000 cash grant and a laptop to help with their studies.
Engineer Patricia Nekpen Opene-Odili, the foundation’s creator, stated during the scholarship presentation that the organization wants to help students—especially girls—who have the drive and aptitude to succeed in science and engineering but are limited financially.
Speaking on behalf of the scholarship recipients, Eweka Ivie thanked the foundation for its generosity and promised to make the most of the opportunity provided to them.
Engr. Adebisi Osim, President of the Association of Professional Women Engineers of Nigeria (APWEN), emphasized the financial obstacles that many gifted young girls encounter when pursuing careers in STEM fields.
