The Executive Governor of Edo State, Sen. Monday Okpebholo, celebrated the 2025 Armed Forces Remembrance Day with a parade to announce the event opened at Oba Ovonrame Square in Benin City, demonstrating his administration’s dedication to remembering the sacrifices made by the nation’s heroes in the past.
In remembrance of the soldiers who gave their lives in the First and Second World Wars, as well as during the Civil War, to protect Nigeria’s territorial integrity, Governor Okpebholo placed wreaths at the cenotaph.
The governor’s pigeon release, which symbolized unification and served as a potent reminder of the significance of uniting as a nation, coincided with the heartbreaking occasion. In remembrance of the departed warriors, ceremonial gunfire was also released during the event.
Recall that in December 2024, Governor Okpebholo pledged ten million Naira to launch the Emblem Appeal Fund for the 2025 Armed Forces Remembrance Day Celebration.
Dignitaries in attendance included the Chief Judge of Edo State, Hon. Justice Daniel Iyobosa Okungbowa; the Head of Service Edo State, Dr. Anthony Okungbowa; the Chairman of the Nigeria Legion, Edo State, A. C. G. Ignatius Enabulele; the Deputy Governor of Edo State, Rt. Hon. Dennis Idahosa; the Speaker of the Edo House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Blessing Agbebaku; and other high-ranking government officials.
