While trying to steal electrical cables from a transformer owned by the Benin Electricity Distribution Company (BEDC) in Edo State, a middle-aged man who has not been recognized was reportedly electrocuted.
According to information received, the event took place at a transformer position off of 2nd East Circular Road in Benin City on Virgin Street. According to information obtained on Monday evening, the deceased attempted to vandalize the gated transformer by going inside but was electrocuted in the process.
Additionally, it was learned that while the transformer was being vandalized, the area’s electricity was restored, causing the deceased to sustain burns of varying intensities.
When reached, CSP Moses Yamu, the Edo State Command spokesperson, confirmed the event.
He said “the operatives of the command at about 6:45 am received information that a young man of about 25 years was seen inside a transformer in the virgin street electrocuted.”
“The unidentified young man was electrocuted with various degrees of burns.”
Yamu added, “the police mobilise to the scene and met the young man in a state of unconsciousness and was rushed to the hospital for medical attention.”
“Preliminary investigation revealed that the deceased was at the scene to vandalise the electric transformer.”
Investigation is ongoing on matter.
