Dr. Paddy Iyamu, the executive chairman of the Edo State Universal Basic Education Board, or SUBEB, visited schools ahead of schedule as elementary and secondary schools started up again to make sure instructors were in their assigned positions.
He suspended a primary school teacher for neglecting their duties during the inspections. Iyamu, who visited many elementary schools in Benin’s Oredo Local Government, expressed dissatisfaction over teachers who awarded students accurate scores even when they answered a question incorrectly.
After looking through the student’s workbook, Iyamu discovered that even in cases where the student provided an incorrect response to a question, the teacher had nevertheless given the student a correct score.
Chairman Iyamu, who visited Uwa Primary School, Adesuwa Primary School, Akenzua Primary School among others, stated his disappointment that the teacher, who possesses a National Certificate in Education, NCE could still not adequately handle primary school pupils.
“The administration is committed to taking the state to greater height in the education sector and other sectors. For education, we cannot toy with our future by not getting the right and competent hands to teach our children. They are our future and as much as we are going to appreciate our teachers and make the working environment very conducive for them, we will also not tolerate indolence and incompetence.”
“As part of the effort to make learning and teaching conducive, dilapidated schools are being rebuilt. Last December, we went to some of the schools on inspection and we got to one and saw the deplorable condition where pupils learn. Immediately, Governor Monday Okpebholo ordered that the dilapidated building be pulled down and reconstruction to start. The pace of work is fast as we are mindful of finishing on time for our children to be taught in a serene environment.”
He also inspected some other schools signed for reconstruction by Governor Okpebholo few weeks ago.
