The 18 local government chairmen in Edo State were suspended due to a dispute, but a Federal High Court in Abuja ordered the parties to maintain the status quo.
While rendering a decision on an ex parte motion submitted by the council chairmen, Justice Emeka Nwite issued the order. Justice Nwite observed that the court must exercise caution while granting the requested reliefs after hearing from attorneys representing the local government chairmen, Anderson Asemota, who made the motion.
He said: “I will only make an order for parties to maintain status quo pending the hearing and the determination of the substantive suit.”
Tajudeen Alade, the chairman of Akoko-Edo Local Government, and his deputy, as well as Kelly Inedegbor, the chairman of Esan North East Local Government, and Thomas Otiobhili, his deputy, have been dismissed.
According to reports, the removal was approved unanimously by the council members in Uromi, Esan East’s headquarters, on the grounds of egregious misconduct, misuse of power, and disregard for their oath of office.
