In a statement released on Friday in Benin City, James-Wisdom Abhulimen, the state chairman of the Nigerian Institute of Public Relations (NIPR), called on Monday Okpebholo, the governor of Edo State, to lead with integrity and ensure the prudent management of the state’s resources as the 2025 fiscal year draws near.
The state NIPR recommended that the governor adopt good governance practices that are characterized by transparency and accountability but also encouraged the governor to publish the state’s income and expenditures on a monthly basis.
According to him, the regular reports will increase public trust and establish a standard for efficient national governance.
He asserts that openness, accountability, and financial disclosure are necessary for public servants and officials because they allow the public to assess possible conflicts of interest, discourage corruption, and boost public trust in the government.
“The State NIPR urged Governor Okpebholo to adopt good governance practices characterized by transparency and accountability.
“We enjoined Governor, Monday Okpebholo to lead with integrity and ensure the prudent management of the State’s resources.
“We also recommended the monthly publication of the state’s income and expenditure reports to foster trust among citizens and set a benchmark for effective governance nationwide”, he said.
The association who extended the Christmas New Year felicitations to the people of Edo State, urged them to embrace hope and remain optimistic as they navigate the challenges of the year ahead.
He believed that the state and Nigeria as a whole will overcome the obstacles through the strength of unity and resolve. He believed that a better future for present and future generations might be shaped by our combined strength.
It is crucial to reject anti-democratic inclinations, social vices, and corrupt practices, according to Abhulimen, who also pointed out that their negative effects on the economy and prestige of the country cannot be overstated.
He also urged people to be honest, diligent, and committed to the advancement of their communities in order to actively contribute to the development of Edo State and Nigeria as a whole. He emphasized the necessity of extensive infrastructure development to lessen the suffering of the populace and propel Edo State’s advancement.
“Specific areas identified for urgent attention include the upgrading of dilapidated roads and socio-economic infrastructure in the state such as the Benin-Auchi Expressway.
“Undertaking massive renovations of public schools and Primary Health Centres across the State, resuscitating pipe-borne water projects to improve access to clean water and the establishment of a functional public transportation system.
“Others include promoting agricultural development for economic sustainability and grassroots development through the construction of massive road networks in the State.
“As the New Year unfolds, the NIPR encourages Edo State residents to work collectively toward making the State a beacon of hope, integrity, and innovation. Together, we can build a society that thrives on inclusivity and progress,” he added.
