A motion suspending the chairmen and vice chairmen of the 18 local government councils for a period of two months was voted on by the Edo State House of Assembly on Tuesday.
Additionally, the House ordered the legislative arms’ leaders to assume control of their respective councils. Following a motion proposed by Isibor Adeh, the member representing Esan North East 1, and seconded by Mr. Donald Okogbe, the member representing Akoko-Edo 2, the council chairmen and their deputies were suspended.
Monday Okpebholo, the state governor, had previously petitioned the House regarding the chairmen’s failure to provide the state government with their local government’s financial information.
In the letter, Okpebholo asked the House to investigate the situation, calling their action an egregious act of misconduct and insubordination.
Six members opposed the proposal, three members refused to support or oppose it, and fourteen members supported the move for their suspension when it came up for debate. Blessing Agbebaku, the House’s speaker, instructed the members that everyone must speak on the subject.
Agbebaku said, “I will implore that all members of the house speak on this matter before a decision is taken.”
